A narrow federal route for cultural and athletic self-employment. Currently paused to new commitments.

The Self-Employed Persons Program is much narrower than its name suggests. It is not a general route for anyone who works for themselves. It was designed for people with relevant experience in cultural activities or athletics who intend to be self-employed in Canada and make a contribution in that field.
'Relevant experience' has a specific meaning here, tied to participation at a certain level in cultural activities or athletics, or to self-employment in those fields. A successful consultant, contractor or small business owner outside those areas generally falls outside the program entirely, however genuinely self-employed they are.
As with the Start-up Visa, the current position matters more than the description: this stream is paused to new commitments. Anyone told today that self-employment is their route to Canada should ask specifically which program is meant, because this one is not presently taking entrants.

| Common confusion | The name suggests a far broader program than it is |
What an application on this route usually involves. Not a checklist that guarantees anything — IRCC sets the requirements, and they change.
Whether it fits you is what a consultation is for. This page cannot answer that and does not try to.
The single most common error in this area. 'Self-employed' sounds general; the program is not.
Effort spent here today does not produce an application that can be filed.
Financial success outside cultural activities or athletics does not bring you inside the program.
For most business applicants, the live route is provincial, and it looks nothing like this program.
Probably not through this program. It is aimed at cultural activities and athletics specifically, not at self-employment generally. Provincial entrepreneur streams are usually the more realistic direction.
It is paused to new commitments. Check current status at the time rather than relying on any written summary.
Participation or self-employment in cultural activities or athletics, at a level and over a period the program defines. It is documented rather than described.
Provincial entrepreneur streams are the main live business route for most people, and they vary considerably by province.
