For students continuing or changing programs beyond their current permit.
A study permit is issued for a set period, usually tied to the length of your program plus a short additional period. If your studies will continue past that date — because the program is longer, you changed programs, or you are moving to a higher level — you need to extend before the permit expires.
Timing is the whole subject. Applying before expiry generally allows you to continue studying under the conditions of your existing permit while the new application is decided. Applying after expiry does not: at that point you are out of status and looking at restoration instead, which is a narrower and time-limited route.
Changing institutions or levels of study also carries its own notification and, in some cases, application requirements. Assuming a permit simply follows you to a new school is a common and avoidable error.

This single date determines whether you keep studying lawfully or fall out of status. It is the mistake that causes the most damage on this route.
A permit is not issued beyond passport validity. A short passport quietly shortens the permit.
Compliance with previous conditions is assessed at extension. Work beyond what was authorised surfaces here.
It may not, and continuing to study at a new institution on that assumption is a compliance problem.
Well before expiry. Leaving it to the final weeks removes the margin that makes the difference between continuing to study lawfully and falling out of status.
If you applied before your permit expired, you can generally continue under your existing conditions while the decision is pending. That protection does not exist if you applied late.
You are out of status, and restoration is the route — but it is time-limited and starts running from expiry. This is one to act on immediately rather than research at length.
Changing institutions carries notification requirements and can carry more. It should be checked before you move, not after.
